St Oswald’s Way Challenge -
Three Generations Support MS Research and Relief Fund.

St Oswald Walk

A Cramlington family have pledged sponsorship to MS Research and Relief Fund  to provide funds to help find a cure for MS, and support those diagnosed with the condition and their family members.

Sheila Jameson, wife of Joe, mother of Ian and Dianne, mother in law of Anne and Steve, and grandmother of Liam, Emma, David and Catherine; was diagnosed with MS in 1977.A former nurse, Sheila had to give up work due to her condition. The following years witnessed many periods of relapses and remissions. Sheila determined as ever, went from a walking stick to a wheelchair but never complained.

In her later years, she remained strong and positive in her outlook, a real role model for others in her situation. Sadly Sheila died in December 2010, aged 74. Sheila's family, drew inspiration from her and decided they wanted to raise money to support others in a similar situation and to fund research to find a cure for MS.

The challenge they set themselves was to walk the St. Oswald's Way, 97 miles in 4 days, starting from Heavenfield near Chollerford on 6 September and finishing at Holy Island on 9 September.

St Oswalds Walk

The main part of the challenge was walked by Sheila’s son in law Steve Cowen who is an experienced walker. Steve was joined along the way by his son Liam and Sheila's husband, Joe. His support vehicle was provided and driven by his wife Dianne & daughter Emma.

Steve and Dianne were guests at the charity’s Gala Dinner in May and taking on the challenge, was a direct result of them attending this event! Steve has raised the fantastic amount  £1,163.25.

To thank Steve and his family they will be invited to a proposed Reception at
Benmar House.

The charity’s Networking and Marketing Manager Sue Dowson represented the Charity at the finish of this challenge by joining Steve and his supporters for the last 3 miles of the walk which finished at Holy Island on Sunday September 9th. The money raised will go towards our Hydrotherapy Pool Appeal. During the celebration of Steve’s challenge two more supporters approached Sue and have offered to embark on another   challenge to promote and raise funds for the Hydrotherapy Pool Appeal.
